“Thank you for being my friend Travel down the road and back again, Your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant” I first met Martha in 1994 and The Golden Girls had already been off the air for two years. But as women of mature years we identified with the four characters on this sitcom and would laughingly talk about getting a house together or maybe live in the same apartment building. There were six of us and we called ourselves MAKADO (MA for Martha and Maureen, KA for Katherine and Karin, DO for Dorothy and Doreen). We shared lots of laughter – the phrase screamed with laughter comes to mind – and lots of talking, eating, and drinking. Martha always had funny stories and over the years she became a very dear friend to me.
After her first cancer diagnosis and treatment, Martha left Toronto and moved back to Kingston, but we continued to talk on the phone and occasionally get together when I came down to Bath. Phone visits were always welcome as Martha had a way of making even embarrassing episodes sound funny e.g. the time the X-ray technician opened the door to the hallway exposing the naked top half of Martha to any passerby. I loved hearing about her grandchildren’s growth and development over the years, always told with such love and pride in her voice. I will miss our phone visits, the sound of her voice and our laughter, and hearing how her grandchildren are doing.
I will miss sharing stories of faith with Martha. We talked about how our mothers taught us to pray, about using Zoom for bible study groups, about passages of scripture.
Martha endured the vicissitudes of cancer treatment with dignity, grace and humour. She was an example of how to continue to fight on for many years with faith and strength. To continue giving to others e.g. sewing dresses for Zambia. To regularly count your blessings and live daily life to the full.
As I said at the beginning “Thank you being a friend” Martha and I thank God for bringing you into my life over 30 years ago.
With much love Maureen

I was new to Moore Business Forms when I met Martha 37 years ago. She was such a good friend and mentor to me. Her infections laugh and sharp sense of humour carried me through some rough times. I always admired her strong sense of faith, her unwaivering love of her family and her excellent work ethic. As I watched Martha over these many years of fighting her cancer battle she was so strong and determined. When our Mother was in Kingston Hospital Martha opened her tiny apartment to Linda and I to stay for almost a month and many a night she had a hot meal and a big hug for us. We so enjoyed having her joining us at Bridgewater for our annual painting weekend and had many a laugh, she was such a story teller! She was a beautiful, artistic lady. May she rest in peace.

Dearest Marty, you were always so supportive when we lived on Albany Avenue in Toronto. You were so parient when you helped me set up my home-based marketing company, and always up for a 'pint' or two at our favourite pub. I will be forever grateful to you for reintrodhcing me to my Presbyterian roots. I am going to miss your laugh and thoughtfulness. Blessings. Alex Mayer ❤️

Our deepest condolences to the deBruyn family. To Jason and Amy, she was a wonderful mom, not only a parent, but a friend. Our family is blessed to have known her and many fond memories of the old days on Davis Street in Trenton. She fought a brave battle and is now in a much better place.
Sincerely, the Wright family - Gerry, Ros, Ross, Jen, Connor and Zachary.

Remembering our lovely Canadian step mum, lovingly known as 'coot' with whom we have some very happy memories, both in England and in Canada. She is very much loved. I will never forget the last time we saw her when my sister and I came to Canada and we had a wonderful time both at her home in Kingston, and at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Niagara Falls. Boy did we laugh so much.
I last spoke to Marty in November and it was wonderful to catch up with all the family news on both sides of 'the pond'.
Sleep tight our lovely coot, lots of love from Debs xxxxx

Remembering our lovely 'stepmum' who we called 'the coot' following a visit to England where we had many laughs and excursions. The last time I saw Marty was on a visit to Canada with my sister where we stayed with her and Amy in rooms overlooking the Niagara Falls. Very precious memories, much loved and missed. Sleep tight, lots of love, Merrill xxx
