This past year has been a journey for Duane. In July of last year, he suffered a serious fall that resulted in a fractured back. He spent several months in the hospital before moving into a long-term care home in November.
Throughout this difficult time, his daughter Lisa was by his side nearly every day, missing only the occasional visit due to exhaustion. While Duane was in Kingston General Hospital, Lisa worked in a nearby unit and spent all her breaks caring for him.
During his initial hospital stay, Duane was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Once his back had healed enough, he was transferred to Providence Care Hospital for rehabilitation. Lisa continued to be with him every day, taking him on walks to support his recovery. The care he received at Providence was exceptional.
In the final month of his life, while he was at the care home, Lisa remained deeply involved in his care—spending hours each day with him, doing things no daughter should ever have to do.
Lisa and her father shared a truly special bond. Just yesterday, through tears, she said to me, “I’ve lost my best friend.”

U sister Linda had been married to Duane and I met him when I read 11 years old. I have so many fond memories there after just too many to list. There was always lots of laughter when spending time with him and his family. Duane was the happiest guy I ever met. I remember Duane asked me to drop-off his car to a garage in Kingston for a repair. I was visiting from Toronto. Duane said the brakes weren't bad and asked me to take his car into a garage for him. Linda his wife at this time went with me. As we drove I noticed the brakes were really bad. Driving down Princess Street I realized we had no brakes. My sister Linda and I just kept praying we wouldn't hit a red light. Passing Taylor Kidd we were almost there. I bought please God don't let us have to brake at a red light. We got through that busy intersection and to the right was the Garage. Me laughing hysterically the Me laughing hysterically a Mechanic waved us in. As I entered I tried to stop and we skidded right but the Mechanic
I grabbed the emergency brake and we made it. Looking back it was one of the funniest moments I had. I told Duane what happened and he said " Well I told you the brakes were bad." I look back and I still break out in laughter. I saw Diane at the nursing home. He was so happy to see me. He asked me if I knew any nice Christian women? I looked at him and we both started laughing! I'll miss those phone calls every Christmas without fail he'd call me. He was my brother in law and I truly loved him even after my sister Linda and him divorced. He was very protective and as a kid I'd take his picture to Junior High School with me and show him off.
He was the real life Jax. Long blonde thick hair, muscle bound, and so very handsome. I'll miss your calls at Christmas and I can still hear your laughter. I can just see now in Heaven wide eyed and so very happy! I'll miss you. Thank you for checking in on me, over the years. I'll remember out last visit to church a few years ago. You had me laughing like usual, and I never tired of your stories. You're happy now. No more physical pain. Love you and to me you'll always be my friend, and brother!
