Peter Hayes was a dedicated man who was prepared to help. I worked a few years with Peter. This is where I first saw his calm professional and dedication for Health & Safety issues. He stood out like a calm giant, helping many staff at QDC. The Town of Greater Napanee Fire Department and Stone Mills Fire Departments were his passion. He would see many things in his 40 yrs + with the Fire Departments. He would share valuable information for any one to learn or to coast away from. Peter was special to all who knew him, but he was more special to his family. He is a big loss for those who knew him, but him family more. I know he will never be forgotten, as someone for the next 50 or 60 years will have a "Peter Hayes story or event". I can say God must have needed a fireman, so he called him home. R I P Pete.

Peter was a guy that was always a happy go lucky kind of guy. He had a love for the outdoors and would share stories of his adventures if you would stay to listen. He and a few Bus Drivers would chat while waiting for the children to board for home. He was always positive and his laughter and smile just made our day! He will be missed by all. Thanks Pete for being a great guy. Maybe we will meet again

Pete,
You were always a wealth of knowledge, a source of calm, and a trusted friend - I valued our time together with the Stone Mills Fire Department more than words could ever describe.
Your laugh, smile and willingness to help anyone around you will be sorely missed!

Hammer Hayes-AKA Pete AKA Mr. Hayes AKA freakin Hayes by certain people that apposed him.
Personally, I met him in 1993 half my life ago. Just starting at QDC I was working in the maximum area at the jail when we were instructed to take an extremely difficult inmate to A&D to be transferred to KP. Tom and Pete were discussing the best way to approach said inmate as they weren’t sure he was going to be willing. When Pete looked at Tom and said with that sly look in his eye, “send the new guy”-It all worked out.
At my mom’s funeral he showed up to my surprise in the blue dodge caravan with a load of Quinte staff in support of my family and I. Before I knew, we were to become close friends.
Pete later became an incredible influence in my life, he persuaded me to join the fire department when they needed a truck driver. For the last 24 years, if there was a fire call of interest, I knew my phone would ring shortly after to discuss how we could have done it better up until his last day at home. He also encouraged me to seek the Captain position which I was honoured to wear 201, Pete’s retired helmet number.
Pete was also known as a mentor and a role model, both on the Fire department and within Corrections. He volunteered me to assist him with teaching MSA breathing apparatus training and maintenance at Quinte. Many road trips over the years to recerts often followed by fish and chips at local pubs.
Pete was a great storyteller he would call during deer season to tell me how the hunt was going. He said he had to climb a mountain to get service. Often exchanging pictures of the scenery surrounding us.
When we couldn’t be in each others presence, we often shared a morning coffee together over the phone. A daily ritual that will be missed.
Pete was always going out of his way to make this world a better place. When I was in the ICU at KGH with my hand he told security he was my brother so he could come cheer me up. A better brother I couldn’t have dreamed of.
To steal a quote from Hammer, “I have one good one left, just for you!”

Captain Hayes was one of the most dedicated officers that I worked with. He never wavered in his dedication to his community and the fire service.
On a personal note I have fond memories of our times discussion who was better the Bruins or the Canadians.
Rest Easy Captain Hayes. We have it from here.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Pete throughout his incredible career at Quinte Detention Centre. Recalling many stories over the past few days with colleagues have brought both laughter and tears. We will never forget his signature chuckle. Pete assumed many roles over the years throughout his career, the most important being a friend who always "had your back". Pete had many accomplishments, being a dedicated public servant in Corrections and serving with the Napanee and Stone Mills Fire Departments for almost 40 years. He has truly been an inspiration for so many.
Pete, you have lived your life well and should be proud of all that you have achieved. It is now time for you to rest.
To Louise, Jennifer, Kayla, Mark and families, on behalf of the staff, past and present at QDC, our sincere condolences. Pete will truly be missed. Cherish the memories.
Respectfully,
Carol French

Please allow me to extend my deepest condolences to all the family and friends of the late Pete Hayes. It was my privilege to work with Pete for many years at the Quinte Detention Centre. His leadership and professionalism, as demonstrated both in the workplace and in the wider community, always inspired my admiration and appreciation. I am one of many who benefitted from his collegiality and his friendship. His steadfast and unfailing support of the LDSB school program at Quinte will always be remembered. His good nature and sense of humor was always welcome and will always be recalled with gratitude. May he know that he was truly respected and appreciated for the countless contributions he made throughout his lifetime. It is my hope that the support of friends and family will be a source of consolation to all who mourn at this time of loss. May Pete now rest in everlasting peace.
Yours very sincerely,
David Mathers
