Obituary of John Stephen Schutzbach
John Stephen Schutzbach, born March 3, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, died unexpectedly and quickly on October 25, 2023 in his home on Amherst Island. He was a loving and proud father of his four children Julie Nietfeld, Jim Schutzbach, Jack Schutzbach and Judy Lambert, and his stepchildren Jan Brockhausen and Jennifer Brockhausen. He is mourned by seven grandchildren Ryan, Heidi, Jason, Jaclyn, Ilissa, Adam and Julia, and nieces, nephews and 4 step-grandchildren, as well as many other family members. He was loved and adored by his surviving wife, Inka Brockhausen-Schutzbach. John was a successful and famous glycobiologist. He was professor of microbiology and biochemistry in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was well funded to research enzymes and carbohydrates in fungi and bacteria. After his retirement he moved to Canada and married Inka on Amherst Island, Ontario, where they lived happily for 25 years. He continued scientific research together with Inka at Queen’s University. He was involved in the management of concert series on the Island and in Kingston, and in many Island activities, such as the museum, the radio station, the men’s society, book club, bridge club. He liked to play golf, the guitar, had a big library of books, was very interested in politics and loved nature and animals. He was greatly appreciated by his friends as a helpful, intelligent and knowledgeable community member. He will be missed by many as a special and precious human being.
