James Mason

Obituary of James Lyle Mason

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jim was born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 8, 1947. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on March 18, 2023 at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital in Napanee, at the age of 75. Jim is survived by his loving spouse Jane Warner, his son Kevin Mason, stepchildren Chris Forkes and Becky Cooney (husband Jonathon), grandson Teddy Cooney, brother William Thomas Mason, niece Servan and nephew Pierre.

Jim graduated from Queen’s University with a PhD in Computer and Electrical Engineering, following which he spent time teaching in universities in both Australia and New Zealand. This experience fostered an abiding love of travel which he avidly continued throughout his life. He spent most of his working life at Queen’s University in Kingston as a Professor in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering, eventually taking a role as Associate Dean. Jim put his love of physics and engineering to good use in his personal life as well, fixing everything from lawn tractors to water pumps and furnaces and was well known among friends as that person who could fix anything. Jim had a wonderful sense of gentle humor, and loved making people laugh. He always had a new joke to tell, (and some old ones too). He loved dogs and certified two of his German Shepherds as therapy dogs. Together they spent many hours providing comfort to the elderly in nursing homes, and to students at Queen’s University.

As a family, we would like to thank all those who provided nursing and medical care at the Kingston Regional Cancer Centre during the later years of Jim’s life. We are very grateful to the nurses at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital in Napanee for their generous and compassionate care of Jim and his family during his last days.

Cremation has taken place according to Jim’s wishes. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Payne Funeral Home, 178 Main St., Odessa. Please share your memories and condolences to the family at www.paynefuneralhome.com
