I met Mike when I was a young teenager and caddying at Cataraqui. He was one of the most interesting men I had ever met. His commitment to golf was unparalleled in my early (and now lifelong) love of this game.
I caddied for Mike and WE won many championships Together. He always said WE won. I was very much influenced by Mike in my formative years. He was an enigma to be sure, but he celebrated my successes through high school, university and my business career.
I will always fondly remember his friendship, mentorship and influence on who I became.
Thank you Mike.

My memories of Mike are mostly from the 70’s when I was a teenage golfer at Cataraqui. When I think back to those times the word that comes to mind is respect. The way Mike carried himself on and off the course he was respected by all of us. He was always there to help with any tips on how to improve if you asked. He was a great guy to have in your corner on and off the course. His golf game was unmatched by anyone! You had a big influence on myself and many others. RIP Mike

Mike was one of the finest amateur golfers that I have ever known.
Eastern Ontario Championship, Whig Standard Trophy, winner, 1975 and 1989.
City Championship winner, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1990.
Mens Club Championship at Cataraqui, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984.
Mike started with his interest in golf as a caddy at the originat York Downs golf club in Toronto, around 1963, where I was the Assistant Golf Professional.
He accompanied a group of assistants to winters at Daytona Beach, where he first met Moe Norman.
Mike was one of two golfers at Cataraqui who possesed that great ability to start the downswing with his lower body, prior to completing the backswing with his arms and hands at the top.
He had terrific balance in the swing.
I had a small practice tee area cut near the back of the 8th green where Mike and Kevin Dickey could practice in peace and quiet.
Mike would do anything for you if you were a friend.
Keith Thomas
Golf Professional, Cataraqui Golf and Country Club.
1968 - 1993

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mike. I became a friend of Mike in his latter years. I had the chance to play some golf with him and enjoyed a special evening at his home where we enjoyed a nice BBQ after a game of golf at Barcovan. Mike was an interesting man. Although he could be hard on you when he tried to get you to act the way he wanted, he clearly had a generous and caring side. One thing I learned about him is that he loved music. He really wished he could play guitar. He said he had a great aptitude for golf but none for the guitar. The day I spent with him, we came across a large turtle on the road. Mike stopped the car to carefully remove the turtle from the road. He said, he had to get that turtle off the road so it would not get hit. That says something. RIP Mike. Wish I had seen you again.

A heavy heart for those that had the privilege to really know Mike Amson. Chris Barber accurately stated on Facebook that he was a complicated man. I have cut and pasted his obituary and forwarded to many that knew understood, respected and admired Mike.
He loved golf and competing and enjoyed a group of close friends. His work ethic to prepare for competition was relentless and he was an artist when hitting golf shots.
We had some memorable rounds of golf and so many interesting conversations about various topics. Mike was willing to share his wisdom with others and had a soft spot for junior golfers.
I asked the great Moe Norman about Mike and his response was, “Great Swing, Great Swing, Great Swing and Great Person, Great Person, Great Person”
Rest in Peace, my FRIEND.

As a junior golfer, Mike was a strong role model for me. I was awestruck by Mike’s unmatched ball striking ability….far superior to anything anyone at Cataraqui had ever seen. He was a gunslinger
Mike was confident, cool, fun and ever willing to share his knowledge.
He was also inflexible and would not tolerate disrespect of any kind.
Playing with Mike was intimidating. He was a machine! Day in day out. ALWAYS the same!
Mike was the MAN.
Never seen robotic ball striking like it in 50 years.
His tempo was so smooth that you couldn’t tell if he was swinging a wedge or a 2 iron!
Mike cared about teaching us golf the right way.
If you wanted to play for money no problem. Didn’t have to be much. But He never gave us strokes. . He MADE us beat him. Made us EARN it. Made us better golfers… people.
Mike and I played countless matches for $2. No strokes. No presses. No quitting after 9 etc. We would play those games like we were in a tournament. Great training for both of us.
Those matches became the best of memories for both of us.
RIP my good friend
