Obituary of Carmen Julian Emery (B.A. CYW)

In her 82nd year, Carmen Emery (of Amherstview) passed into heaven with her husband and daughters by her side on January 6, 2021. Profoundly missed by husband, best friend and soulmate Arthur Emery, along with beloved daughters Susan Emery, Kiara Sol and Nancy Burtenshaw, and their husbands. Predeceased by son Mark Emery and beloved dog Daisy. Devoted Mimi to 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. 

 

Carmen graduated with highest honours from St. Lawrence College (CYW) receiving both the R.C. Short First Decade Prize and the Child Care Workers Association Award. Carmen later attended Queen’s University and earned her B.A. in psychology. 

 

Carmen was well respected for her contributions as a Child and Youth Worker at Beechgrove Children’s Centre, and, most significantly, as an Adolescent Care Worker at LaSalle Secondary School, Frontenac High School and Sharbot Lake High School. 

 

Carmen positively influenced countless lives during her years as an ACW and many of these individuals have expressed their appreciation for Carmen’s impact on their lives. 

 

Carmen has been acknowledged with prestigious awards including: 

Outstanding Service Award (Frontenac County Board of Education) 

Outstanding Contribution to Education (Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation)  

Earl Memorial Trophy (Sharbot Lake High School) 

Honorary Life Member, Rural Frontenac Community Services 

 

After her retirement, Carmen continued to share her wisdom as a teacher at the Kingston Learning Centre where she helped educate a new generation of educational support staff. 

 

Among her accomplishments, Carmen was a lay reader at St. Peter’s Anglican Church and was admired for her selfless contributions to the church for many years. 

 

Carmen is most remembered for her generous spirit, unwavering commitment to family, altruistic kindness, witty sense of humour and feisty joie de vivre. 

 

Carmen’s family will hold a private burial service at Cataraqui Cemetery. A celebration of Carmen’s life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Kingston.

 

Genuine appreciation is extended to the amazing KGH team on Kidd 10 for their compassion and care.
