I want to express my deepest sympathies to Barb's family. She was a wonderful educator and devoted mother. The more I worked with Barb, the more I learned what an incredible woman she was with her many interests, talents, and her loyalty and dedication to students. Barb never gave up on anyone! Students learned so much from Barb and loved hearing stories about Charlie. We will miss you Barb! You will stay in our hearts. Allison

I had the pleasure of working with Barb as a fellow EA many years ago at J.J. O'Neill CS in Napanee. I remember her as being so kind, and that her empathic approach to supporting our students was really inspiring. She was the reason I passed my 'Sign Language I' exam that year (without her practicing with me during breaks I would have bombed the practical exam for sure). She made a point to give of her time and energy to help me navigate that course, she didn't have to help, and she didn't have to be asked to help, she just did. She made it fun and I really appreciated her support and kindness when I struggled with what I'm sure were very basic sign language concepts for her. I thanked her then, life got busy, we moved to different school and loss touch. Her passing is a great loss for our education worker community, as I know it is for her family and friends. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Gary, Charlie and those who love Barb and mourn her passing, I am praying that the Lord eases your pain and loss.
I want to share this drawing that Barb gave as a retirement gift and shows the hands of our team at Holy Cross CSS in 2015. I believe it depicts Barb’s philosophy of education.
She uses hands to show us how to reach out and help others. She saw us as an educational team of individuals who respected not only our own strengths and challenges but those of the students entrusted to us.
I loved Barb and appreciated her honesty, sense of humour and work ethic. She was well known as a strong advocate for all students, especially those with special needs. I believe Barb would want us to carry on this legacy. Marie Gavan Knox

My dear Barbaraaah.....
We would always greet each other by me calling "Barbaraaah" and she'd reply "darling". Oh the laughs we've shared over the many many years of working together. Barb had a gift with students who seemed to have the hardest time adjusting to the demands of high school. She was honest, direct and compassionate, what lucky qualities to have.
Barb, you're a part of the fabric of my day, I'll miss you my friend. Rest easy lady.

I’ve had the great pleasure of working with Barb as a fellow EA at Holy Cross for 12+ years. She was a woman of many talents. She was an artist, an amazing seamstress, an educator, bilingual (sign language), loving friend, sister, animal lover, a motorcycle mamma, dutiful daughter, adoring wife to Gary and fiercely dedicated mother to Charlie. I loved her sense of adventure (trips to Ireland) and the joy she found in helping others. She was one cool lady. I posted this picture because we randomly dressed alike one day which tends to happen when you work closely with someone. You start to think and look alike. I had the joy of walking with her during lunch breaks a few times. We would just walk and talk. A couple of weeks before Barb got sick she gave a warm goodbye and said “love you” as we were heading out the door to go home. I love you too Barb♥️ ~ Sue

I never had the privilege of knowing Barb. However my daughter was blessed to have support from Barb at Holy Cross. She made an impact on my daughter by seeing some thing in Faith. Faith struggles academically and one day Barb told her she was a “gifted writer”. Like many teens they don’t tell their parents much about their day at school. Well on this particular day Faith came home beaming! Feeling great about herself and relaying the kind words Barb passed on to her. I am an Educational Assistant as well , and I have seen just how a few simple encouraging words from an adult at school can make such difference in how students see themselves in a different light and will strive to do better. Barb did exactly this for my daughter as I’m sure she has done for many many more students. Thank you Barb! These kids have a very special angel watching over them now. My sincere condolences to the family and coworkers.

Barb loved working with kids. In my class, when she was able to help a struggling student with an assignment, she would tell me about it at the end of the period, with a big smile on her face because it gave her great satisfaction to have helped the student to understand. I know that she had a huge impact on some of them, and have often seen her chatting and visiting with various students in the halls after class hours. Our E.A.'s are so important in helping teachers to reach every student and they give a lot of themselves The impact they have on students who need help is enormous and so much appreciated, especially by the student--Barb always did her best to "connect" with these students. Barb always asked how my boys were--she remembered them all--and Charlie was her greatest joy. She recounted different occasions when he was excited, frustrated, upset, etc., and she felt it all, as the amazing mother she was. The pandemic was difficult on her because it put limits on seeing Charlie. I will always remember Barb as a caring mother and a supportive E.A., as someone who enjoyed life and had a great sense of humour. She will always be in my heart. May God support her beautiful family and the people she touched as Barb watches from afar.

I was so very sad to hear of Barb’s illness and passing. I worked with her, very closely, for many years and grew to appreciate her directness, sincerity, and kindness. You always knew where you stood with her… Barb was without guile, her feelings were reflected on her face, you knew when she was happy and you knew when she was sad. Her eyes would light up whenever she talked of Charlie, she loved him so very much. Her joy was contagious….I remember her excitement about the outdoor art show in Newburgh and her lovely painting of the cows on her farm…she was so proud of it. Barb’s kindness to her students, and to all of us, was apparent in the little things she did….always on time, always there…she repaired rain boots for my dog … she was always willing to help. Barb, wherever you are, you will always be present to those who remember you…. Anne Poels

My condolences to Gary and Charlie and to the rest of Barb's family. Barb passed much sooner than seems fair. Her fierce love and devotion to her family and to her farm inspired me. She was a woman who surprised me with the range of talents she possessed. The day she showed me her etchings and paintings I was amazed. So much talent quietly displayed.
