My sincere condolences. Major Rutherford was our mentor for the RMCC International Model NATO team, and he was one of my favourite professors. He sincerely cared about his students, and took the time to mentor and encourage us. He was a model educator and officer. Rest in peace, Sir.

I am sorry to hear that Ian has passed away. Though I have not seen him since we left to different high schools, we were friends all through public school and he was a kind fellow. Best wishes to all and enjoy this photo of our grade three class in Toronto. Find Ian in the second row. Christopher Tracey

I taught with Ian for several years at RMC. I will remember him for his impeccable preparation, detailed slides and care for the students. He had a dry sense of humour, often evident in his witty and memorable illustrations for key concepts. The crisp blue uniform, polished shoes, and neatly trimmed moustache were old-school RCAF and a mark of his pride in service. In a kinder era, he might have spent many more years teaching. More than a decade of RMC graduates took his special understanding of Canadian politics with them into the world beyond RMC’s limestone.
Ian will be missed. My deepest condolences to Pam, Gail, and Kevin.

We have been so shocked and saddened with this news. It is far too early to lose your beloved husband, father, family member and friend. We haven’t seen Ian in many years, but we do remember how bright he was and how he was so passionate about the military at such a young age. He knew what he wanted and stayed focused on his dreams. He accomplished so much. I hope some day the wonderful memories of his strong character and a life full of family and career accomplishments will lessen your pain. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this deeply sad time.

Dear Pam, while away from Kingston I learned with shock and great sadness of Ian's passing. I got to know Ian through our participation in the organizing committee of the Saint Andrew's Society of Kingston. My memory of Ian seconds those expressed by friends writing here before me: he was dedicated, kind, polite, knowledgeable and highly intellectual. I enjoyed volunteering with him. I am deeply saddened by Ian's early departure and your loss. I wish you and your family peace and with time, acceptance. My thoughts are with you.

Ian was a man of wit and candor, two of his many fine qualities that I appreciated both as his professor and as a colleague. The consummate professional, I always knew I could get the straight goods from him despite what BS was being spun by the bureaucracy. The RCAF motto, "Per Ardua Ad Astra" is a fitting epitaph for Ian's life in service to this country and not merely the RCAF motto. I mourn his death.

Ian was an incredibly kind and intelligent person. When working with Ian during the 2019 federal election, I found him to be professional, kind and incredibly knowledgeable. I also know that he was so looking forward to time with his wife after the election. He was a hard worker, and I appreciated his wit, and his kindness. Kindest thoughts to the family.

Ian was a former graduate student in one of my RMC courses and later a valued Departmental member. He was always thoughtful and positive with his colleagues. We both enjoyed discussions on international relations and teaching. He reflected a gentlemanly grace and kindness that was much appreciated by all. It was too soon to say goodbye. My condolences to Pam and the Rutherford family.

It is with sadness that I’ve learned of Ian’s passing. My sincere condolences to the Rutherford family. My first memories of flying at 405 Sqn have Ian at the forefront, where he never passed an opportunity to share his insightful ways of tracking submarines on the CP140 Aurora! A dedicated RCAF Officer, a true operator, you influenced and guided so many! RIP old friend…DUCIMUS!

I remember Ian for his sharp intellect, his great skills as a TacNav and as an instructor, his strong leadership, his wry sense of humour and his friendship.
I cannot fathom what all of you, Pam, Gail and Kevin and Ian's family are going through. I can only say I am sorry for your loss and the great pain it brings. I knew your husband, your father, your brother as a great and lovable man. I wish I had got to spend more time with him and getting to know him. I had the pleasure to work with and for Ian as instructors at 404 Sqn early in my career- he taught me much of what it takes to be a leader at a formative part of my career- accountability and competence, with no small measure of wit. To this day I've met no one who can carry off the moustache and skinny leather jacket combo like Ian! Pam and family, sincere condolences from Kathy and I.

Dear Pam,
I worked with Ian in both the provincial and federal elections. I am so very sorry to know the struggle your family has been through in the last months. The Ian I remember was quick witted, with amazing attention to detail. He was a pleasure to speak with and in particular during the provincial election was a great support to me in the office. I only have positive memories of him in the work place.
My thoughts are with you as you move through this difficult time.

An excellent TACNAV on the Aurora, he was a strong leader and sound tactician during the closing days of the cold war. During down periods between missions on deployment and in the back bar of the Mess, he would contribute to many thought provoking conversations over "a few debrief pops", where we solved the worlds problems. He has left us far too soon.

Dearest Pam,Gail and Kevin,
My heart is aching for you and I wish that I was able to travel and be with you. I have many vivid memories of Ian because Dad and I visited you many times over the years, and the time always flew by so quickly. However, the most vivid memory that has stayed with me is of Ian attending Dad’s retirement party. Ian happened to be at the Winnipeg Air Force base just then, and was able to be with us. He was absolutely the life and soul of the party at our table. His witty remarks kept us laughing all evening. That is the memory I choose to keep at this sad time.
My love and deepest sympathy to you all,
Mom ( Grandma )

In 2019, Auntie Pam and Uncle Ian had me come down to Kingston to stay with them over the Easter weekend when I was doing military training in Ottawa for a few months. Uncle Ian took me out on the 1000 Islands cruise and he just nerded out on the military history of the region in the best possible way. I doubt I retained much of what was said but it was amazing getting to hear someone so enthusiastically share their thoughts and ideas and all the cool stuff they had learned on a topic they were clearly so passionate about.
Auntie Pam, Gail, and Kevin, we are so sorry for your loss. Please reach out if there is anything at all we can do for you in this terrible time.
Love Adam, Kiran and Sam

Having been with Ian for primarily short visits during the course of his marriage to my sister, Pam, my best memories of Ian centre most often around his wonderfully intelligent and wry sense of humour — so quick and often delivered in a deadpan style which made what he said all the funnier.
Pam, Gail and Kevin and all of Ian’s family — our whole family feels such sorrow for your loss, a loss we all share.

That matter of fact manner demeanor that Ian carried off so well, will be missed. He was a delight to converse with. Being so well read there was never a shortage of topics and opinions, some shared, some debated but always interesting. I hold fond memories of the pleasure my late husband, Rob, took sharing time with Ian. Their military backgrounds gave them a bond which I could only appreciate from a distance. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to spend a few days with Ian and Pam right before COVID distanced us all. My thoughts and prayers are with Pam, Gail and Kevin during this very difficult time. Losing a loved one so young is so difficult - I know this only too well. My thoughts are also with our mom, Barbara and brother, Dave and the entire extended family. Step or blood, we are all family. Rest in peace, Ian. Always remembered. Louise Barton
